Valentine’s Day - Uprooting Modesty, the Fabric of Faith and Society

The Modern Reality We Are Living In

In the modern world, all around us, we see concerted, focussed efforts striving to make society more immoral and immodest. Indecent images on billboards have reduced the honour of women to a mere sales tool, while a constant barrage of obscenity keeps reaching devices in the hands of the old and young through social media. From personal observation, this spreading culture weakens the family unit, leaves it malfunctioning, with children losing their innocence, teenage pregnancy and abortion rates skyrocketing, and many growing up sometimes not knowing their parents, pushing society toward complete utter disarray.

Divine Guidance in a Time of Confusion

As Muslims, we are guided at every step of life by the noble teachings of the Holy Quran, the book of guidance sent by Allah Almighty, containing solutions to the problems of society for every generation until the Day of Judgement. Indeed, those who love to spread immodesty amongst those who believe face painful punishment in the hereafter, though Allah knows and you do not know.

Valentine’s Day and Its Distorted Origins

One means that has been adopted to promote this decline is Valentine’s Day, a yearly event named after a Christian priest, Valentine, who was executed for secretly marrying soldiers against the emperor’s orders. Over time, tales, fables, and a distorted message grew around his namesake, turning the day into a tool for duping naive people, squandering hard earned money, and waving goodbye to modesty and chastity, even though he stood for the institution of marriage, not illicit relations outside it.

The Prophetic Standard of Modesty

Regardless of the person or story, the word and speech of the Beloved Prophet Muhammad صَلَّی اللہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّمَ are enough to open our eyes to the truth. He clearly outlined the importance of modesty with beautifully concise wisdom: haya is part of iman, leading to Paradise, while rudeness leads to the Fire. This special characteristic of Islam either beautifies a person or blemishes them.

A Timeless Lesson Through Wisdom

Over 1400 years, the Prophet dealt with this fatal, destructive disease using immense timeless wisdom. When a man came seeking permission to commit adultery, he was guided gently—asked about his mother, daughter, sister, and aunts—until his heart changed. The Messenger placed his hand, asking Allah to forgive sins, purify the heart, and guard chastity, and the man never returned to what was sinful.

Questions We Must Ask Ourselves Today

This same question stands for anyone preparing to indulge in celebrations without thinking of the consequences on family, future, happiness, and communities. Would you accept flowers from an unrelated stranger, a cinema outing, or a flirt with your daughter? If not, why accept it for others?

Protecting Faith, Families, and Society

The popularization of this day is a calculated ploy to uproot the fabric of faith and society, to replace peace and tranquillity with fear, abuse, and molested lives. As Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar taught, when modesty and faith are removed, both are lost together. These realities are also explored thoughtfully through Our Courses, offered with a reasonable Monthly fee and a Free trail for those seeking clarity and truth.
