The Signs of the Day of Judgment

Understanding the Reality of the Day

The signs of the day of judgment and judgement are not myths or distant stories. They are connected to the past, present, and future, leading toward the resurrection, the lesser hour, and finally the hour itself. Scholars have always explained that these signs are both minor and major, unfolding step by step as Allah has decreed.

Social and Moral Decline as Minor Signs

Among the clearest minor signs are societal shifts such as loss of honesty and trust, authority given to the unworthy, widespread ignorance, children disobeying parents, and music and dance becoming common. We also see increased killing, murder, adultery, fornication, zina, growing wealth and abundance, and people building tall buildings as competition rather than need.

Religious Confusion and Misguided Knowledge

Another warning sign is religious and spiritual changes, where people claim loyalty to the Quran while rejecting or reject the Hadith and Sunnah, and denying the divine decree (Qadr). Mosques become places of worldly talk, while people are seeking knowledge only for gain, not guidance. This results in tribulations, fitna, and fitan spreading quietly.

Historical Trials Foretold by the Prophet

History reflects these signs through wars, internal conflicts, and battles such as Camel, camel, and Siffin, the plague of Amwas in Emmaus, a city in Palestine, and false claimants to prophethood like Musaylimah, Aswad, and Anasi. These events followed the sending of the Prophet, his peace and blessings, his death, and the conquest of Jerusalem during early Islam.

Knowledge Being Taken Away

The taking away of knowledge happens with the disappearance of scholars, as mentioned in Sahihayn. Affairs are entrusted to the unqualified, while riba, usury, interest, musical instruments, and drinking alcohol spread. This decline creates confusion and weakens moral responsibility.

Physical and Environmental Changes

The signs also appear through physical and time changes, such as frequent earthquakes, time passing faster, a year feeling like a month, acidic rain, and shorter travel distance. The Arabs see their land turn into meadows and rivers, and the Euphrates will uncover a mountain of gold.

Breakdown of Family and Society

Families face strain as family ties are cut, offspring become a source of grief and anger, women feel displeased, the barren feel free of responsibility, and homosexuality spreads openly. Men begin to look like women, music fills homes, wines are consumed excessively, and immorality and shamelessness are practiced publicly.

Minor Signs Leading to Major Events

All these are recorded as portents in hadith, narrated by Hudhayfah ibn Asid, listing ten signs that appear one after another, first then soon, some emerging from Yemen. Their order is partly known and partly unknown, explained in sahih text and scholarly context by Shaykh Muhammad al-Salih al-Uthaymin.

The Major Signs and the Final Stage

The major signs begin with the appearance of the Mahdi, a righteous leader to unite Muslims, followed by the Dajjal, the great deceiver and Antichrist. Then comes the return of Jesus (Isa) who descends in Damascus, breaks the cross, kills swine, and ends Jizya. After this, Gog and Magog, Yajuj and Majuj, bring widespread destruction.

Cosmic Signs and the End of the World

The final stage includes cosmic events such as the sun rising from the west, smoke covering the Earth, three landslides, fire in Hijaz, damage to the Kabah, and the Beast, Dabbat al Ard, a creature that speaks. The trumpet will be blown by angel Israfil.

The Final Separation of Humanity

At the end, a gentle wind takes the souls of believers, leaving none to say Allah. Only the worst people remain, and judgment is established. On that day, deeds are weighed on a scale, and the Most Wise, Just, All-Knowing Allah decides between Paradise and Hellfire, as described in Surah Abasa 80:33-42.
