Rights of Neighbours in Islam
In Islam, the rights of neighbours are of great importance, highlighting how essential it is for Muslims to maintain positive interaction with those around them. The Qur’an, being the book of Allah, emphasizes the need for brotherhood, humanity, and family values, all of which are deeply rooted in the principles of Taqwa and the fear of God. Allah says:
“Serve Allah, and join not any partners with Him; and do good – to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbours who are near, neighbours who are strangers, the Companion by your side, the wayfarer [you meet], and what your right hands possess: For Allah loveth not the arrogant, the vainglorious.”
No Harm to Neighbors in Islam
In Islam, the Last Prophet, Mohammed (PBUH), in his statement, emphasized the importance of treating neighbours with kindness, praising this act three times to highlight its value. A believer should ensure that their neighbours feel safe and protected from evil acts. Islam asserts that a neighbourhood should be a place of peace and security, where the well-being of others is a shared responsibility, reflecting the teachings of Allah and the people around us.
It is mentioned in Sahih Bukhari that:
The Prophet, (Peace and blessings be upon him) said: “By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer.’’ It was asked, “Who is that, O Messenger of Allah?’’ He said, “One whose neighbour does not feel safe from his evil.”
Islam Encourages Kindness to Neighbors
In Sahih Bukhari, the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) taught that a believer should always ensure their neighbour feels safe and secure from evil. The Messenger of Allah emphasized the importance of treating neighbours with kindness, as this aligns with the will of Allah.
“Jibril kept recommending me to treat my neighbour well until I thought that he would tell me to make him one of my heirs.”
Take Care of Your Neighbors in Islam
In Islam, it is important to take care of your neighbours as they are a key part of a peaceful environment and strong community. The Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings be upon him) in a Hadith by Abu Dharr teaches that you should behave kindly towards them and help with their needs in return. This is an example of the love and care that Allah encourages.
“O Abu Dharr! Whenever you prepare a broth, put plenty of water in it, and give some of it to your neighbours.”
Offer Meals to Your Neighbors
In Islam, a believer has the responsibility to look after their neighbours and be aware of their situation. The Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings be upon him) mentions in a Hadith that sharing food is a good deed that brings reward from God and benefits in the life hereafter.
” He is not a believer who eats his fill whilst his neighbour beside him goes hungry.”
Respect What Your Neighbors Offer You
Islam strongly advises mankind to respect the gifts given by Neighbours, emphasizing the importance of kindness in building strong relationships. This is part of The Importance of Charity in Islam, where even the smallest acts of giving are cherished. The Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Abu Hurayrah that even something as small as a sheep’s foot should be accepted with love and respect, as a sign of gratitude and appreciation for the Neighbour’s house. By respecting their offerings, we build stronger bonds and show the true essence of Islam.
“O Muslim women! No one should scorn the gift of a neighbour, even if it is (only) a sheep’s foot.”
