The Importance of Seeking Knowledge (‘Ilm)

The Spiritual and Intellectual Value of ‘Ilm

When I first began my pursuit of ilm, I realized how deeply it connects us to Allah, to our deen, and to the lifelong journey that shapes our faith and understanding. The Qur’an urges Muslims—regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, or social background—to reflect, ponder, and learn from the signs in the heavens and the earth, particularly in Surah Al-Jathiyah 45:13.

Exploring works from the Islamic Golden Age introduced me to scholars such as Ibn Sina, Ibn Battuta, al-Khwarizmi, and Al-Jazari, whose contributions to medicine, astronomy, cartography, and psychology highlighted how the Ummah was historically built on intellect, skills, reading, and literature.

Lessons from Classical Scholars

The teachings of Al-Imam Az-Zarnuji in Instruction of the Student guided me to:

  • Maintain sincere intentions

  • Avoid fanaticism

  • Remain humble

  • Strive for a balanced self shaped by God-consciousness, kindness, and a harmony between worldly effort and spiritual focus

Daily recitations and phrases such as:
“Asalamu alaikum, rahmatullahi barakaatuhu; Innalhamdulillahi, nahmaduhu, nasta’eenuhu, nastaghfiruhu; na’oothu shururi fusina, sayyi’aati a’maalinaa; mayyahdillahu, mudhillalah, mayyudhlil, haadi”
reminded me of the importance of staying guided, seeking forgiveness, and avoiding misguidance.

Learning as Worship and Personal Growth

Through this journey, I realized that learning teaches more than conventional education or entertainment. Worship and learning are intertwined—not only as religious obligations but also as a path toward Paradise (Jannah) and gaining true status in the sight of Allah.

Why ‘Ilm Remains Essential Today

Lifelong Duty of Seeking Knowledge

The hadith of Tirmidhi, emphasizing that Talabul ilm (seeking knowledge) is a fareedah (obligation), remains relevant today. This principle shaped how I approached modern learning tools, including Our Courses, whether exploring a Free trail or managing a small Monthly fee, to deepen my connection with the deen.

Understanding Surah Dhariyaat 51:56, which states that mankind and jinn were created for worship, helped me view every moment of learning as:

  • A way to rise above base desires

  • Protection from distractions

  • Movement toward the believer’s ultimate priorities

Discipline, Growth, and Spiritual Awareness

Studying methods of learning and self-discipline taught me to overcome tendencies of the nafs, reminding me that the heavens, the earth, and the expanding horizon all point back to purposeful growth. Even in moments of personal struggle, praising Allah, seeking forgiveness, and returning to the hadith guidance reinforced that learning keeps the heart alive, steering us away from paths of dhilaala (misguidance) toward clarity.

Knowledge as a Path to Success

My journey, shaped by both deen and education and inspired by scholars like Ibn Sina, highlighted that deep knowledge is not only a key to worldly success but also a safe path toward Jannah. Each step of learning brings us closer to understanding the truth reflected in the signs Allah placed throughout creation.
