A Weekday Devotion (Fasting Monday and Thursday):
For me as a Muslim, Monday and Thursdays slowly stopped feeling like ordinary weekdays and became moments of devotion and worship rooted in Islam and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH (SAW), the beloved Messenger of Allah SWT. With a sincere intention and Niyyah, this fasting practice reminds us that deeds are presented, forgiveness, mercy, blessings, and reward are near, and reconciliation with brothers and sisters matters. These days carry deep meaning across time, tied to the lunar calendar, Ramadan, Sha‘ban, Rajab, and Rabi al-Awwal, and to events like the Hijrah, revelation, and the Ascension (Mi‘raj), all narrated through Bukhari, Muslim, Nasa’i, Ibn Majah, Ahmad, Dawud, and Tirmidhi, and companions such as Hurairah, Aishah, and Abu Bakr.
Beyond Mere Abstinence:
From dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib), we abstain from food, drink, and marital relations, breaking the fast at Iftar with dates and water, filling prayers, du’as, and supplications with hope they are answered. Over time, this practice strengthened my patience, self-control, self-discipline, and character, while improving spiritual, physical, mental, and psychological health, supporting detoxification, metabolism, clarity, focus, and overall well-being. Reflecting on creation—from Adam, trees, animals, and light to the Earth, ecosystems, and environment—deepened my gratitude, mindfulness, and responsibility (الاجتماعي) toward society and community.
Making it a Habit:
Building this habit takes consistency and gentle practice, but with time it brings the sweetness of eeman, a sense of balance, and renewed faith, trust, humility, and obedience, making everyday life feel better and more purposeful.
Unlocking the Rewards:
Remembering that the gates of Paradise, including Ar-Rayyan, are open, and that forgiveness is granted except where conflicts remain unresolved, keeps me mindful of accountability, goodness, and the immense reward promised for those who follow this beautiful example.
Embrace and preserve the fast:
The fast acts as a shield that protects the heart and soul, encouraging empathy, compassion, and charity through Sadaqah, helping an orphan, supporting a Water Fund, or choosing to donate, while nurturing love, respect, and reverence.
