1. Speak Only When Necessary
Talking is a basic necessity of daily life, but unnecessary speech is often detrimental. The Sunnah teaches that remaining silent is better than speaking uselessly.
2. Speak Clearly and Steadily
The Holy Prophet صَلَّی اللّٰہُ تَعَالٰی عَلَیْہِ وَاٰلِہٖ وَسَلَّم spoke in a clear, steady, and beautiful way, allowing listeners to easily memorize his words, as reported by Sayyidatuna Aisha Siddiqa.
3. Use a Polite and Gentle Tone
Always speak politely, with a smile, using a compassionate tone with the young and a respectful tone with elders. This brings respect from all sides.
4. Avoid Loudness and Shouting
Speaking loudly, yelling, or creating noise in gatherings is poor etiquette and contradicts Islamic manners.
5. Refrain from Distracting Gestures
Actions like high-fiving, clapping, or whistling during conversation are forms of amusement and diversion, discouraged in Islamic etiquette.
6. Maintain Clean and Respectful Behavior
Avoid actions like picking the nose, scratching ears, or spitting while talking, as these are considered gross and disrespectful.
7. Listen Attentively Without Interrupting
Good manners include listening calmly, not interrupting, and letting others finish speaking before responding.
8. Do Not Mock or Ridicule Others
Never imitate, mimic, or ridicule someone—especially those with a stutter—as this can deeply hurt feelings.
9. Avoid Excessive Laughter
The Prophet ﷺ never laughed out loud or chortled excessively. Too much laughter removes grace and elegance from a person.
10. Speak According to Understanding
Always speak with a proper reason, keeping in mind the listener’s mentality, intellect, and level of understanding, using clear and simple words.
11. Control the Tongue from Evil
Guard your tongue from evil, swearing, and harmful speech. True salvation lies in controlling speech and reflecting on one’s sins.
12. Remember the Tongue Affects the Whole Body
The tongue directs the actions of all body parts—if it is straight, the body remains straight; if crooked, the body suffers.
13. Avoid Excessive Joking and Mockery
Constant joking, roasting, and mockery destroy friendship, create hatred, and lay the foundation of bad deeds in the heart.
14. Shun Shameless and Immoral Speech
