12 Manners and Etiquettes of Dua

1. Have Sincerity (Ikhlās)

Du‘a must be made only for Allah, not to impress people or to be heard by others. True sincerity means your heart turns fully to Allah, knowing that only He can help. When du‘a comes from a sincere heart, it becomes powerful and meaningful.

2. Be in a State of Purity (Wudu)

Although wudu is not compulsory, it is highly recommended. Performing wudu cleanses the body and also prepares the heart and mind to speak to Allah respectfully. Clean clothes and a clean place also show honor to this great act of worship.

3. Face the Qiblah

Facing the Qiblah (Kaaba in Makkah) while making du‘a follows the practice of the Prophet ﷺ. It helps create focus, discipline, and a sense of direction in worship, even though Allah hears du‘a from every direction.

4. Raise Your Hands

Raising the hands with palms open is a sign of humility and need. It shows that you are asking Allah like a beggar asking generously. The Prophet ﷺ taught that Allah feels shy to return raised hands empty.

5. Begin with Praise of Allah

Start your du‘a by praising Allah with words of Hamd, such as thanking Him, glorifying Him, and acknowledging His greatness. This pleases Allah and prepares your du‘a for acceptance.

6. Send Blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ

Before and after du‘a, send Salawat (Durood) upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Scholars explain that du‘a rises slowly, but Salawat rises quickly, and it helps carry the du‘a upward so it is not rejected.

7. Use Allah’s Beautiful Names

Allah loves to be called by His Beautiful Names. Choose names that match your need:

  • Ask forgiveness using Al-Ghafoor

  • Ask mercy using Ar-Rahman

  • Ask help using Al-Wakil
This shows understanding and closeness to Allah.

8. Ask with Certainty and Trust

Never doubt whether Allah will answer. Ask with full belief, knowing Allah hears every word. Even if the answer is delayed or different from what you expect, trust that Allah’s choice is best.

9. Be Humble and Focused

Du‘a should not be rushed or distracted. Lower your gaze, calm your body, and keep your heart present. A humble posture reflects submission, and Allah responds to hearts that are attentive, not careless.

10. Confess Sins and Repent

Before asking for your needs, admit your mistakes and seek forgiveness. Asking Allah while continuing in sin blocks acceptance. Sincere repentance opens the doors of mercy and brings du‘a closer to being answered.

11. Ensure Halal Earnings and Lifestyle

Eating haram food, wearing haram clothing, or earning unlawfully can prevent du‘a from being accepted. A halal lifestyle purifies the soul and allows du‘a to rise without barriers.

12. Be Patient and Persistent

Do not give up if the answer is delayed. The Prophet ﷺ warned against impatience. Du‘a is answered in one of three ways:

  • It is given immediately

  • It is saved for the Hereafter

  • A harm is removed instead
Persistence shows trust and love for Allah. For more information contact us.
